Episode 26 : Dunfanaghy Workhouse & The Story of Wee Hannah
Dunfanaghy Workhouse is now a tourist office, craft shop, coffee shop and a heritage centre. In previous times it witnessed at first hand one of the most terrible events in Irish history, the Great Famine. As this episode takes place in Dunfanaghy, it is a tale that was played out thousands of times all over Ireland.
We met up with local historian and author, Cary Meehan, to hear about the Workhouse, the policies of the British government at that time in Ireland and the moving story of Wee Hannah, a former inmate of the workhouse whose story was written down many years later in her own words. A tragic story with a somewhat happy ending.
