Episode 33 : Beekeeping at Na Tithe Gloine (The Glasshouses)

We visited Na Tithe Gloine (The Glasshouses) in Killult near Falcarragh. The business is a community owned horticultural project which uses organic methods to produce high quality fruit, vegetables and herbs, made available to the local community through shops, restaurants, a box scheme, and plant sales.

The project is located in Killult, between Falcarragh and Gortahork, in the heart of the Gaeltacht (Gaelic-speaking region) of Cloughaneely on the northwest coast of Donegal, in the northwest of Ireland. The centre includes a one acre Glasshouse, several large polytunnels and an extensive area of arable land. It is run by a a community based company; Lárionad Acmhainní Nádúrtha (LAN Ctr.) ~ Centre for Natural Resources.

Recently they have added some beehives and hope to produce honey commercially in the next few years. They also host beekeeping training courses. Veronica McNulty, the head horticulturist, showed us the hives and told us why bees are so important to the environment.
